# How to work with default rating scales

## In this artikel we explain how to customize and edit the rating scales.

A standard rating scale can be created in advance. This ensures that when adding a question that requires a score, a pre-defined scale is automatically loaded. For example, “Far below expectations – Far above expectations” for questions that evaluate an employee’s performance.

### **Set up a default rating scale**

You can find the default rating scale in Learned in two ways, namely:

1. Settings icon top right → Company settings → Products → Performance → Settings
2. Profile picture at the bottom left of the menu bar - Organisation settings - Plan - Performance - Settings

There are two possible standard scales that can be set:

- **For questions related to skills** (for example: To what extent do you think you demonstrate Behavior X, corresponding to Skill Y?)
- **For questions related to KPIs or other questions where you want to request a score** (for example: How did you perform on Project Z?)

❗️**Note**: The default labels below can be adjusted, but the scale will always have to be the same. For example, if you want to answer KPIs on a 5-point scale, then the scale for skills must also be a 5-point scale.

The names of the levels can be adjusted via the text fields to best fit your organization. The levels can be set in multiple languages, depending on the languages selected in the organization settings.

#### **Using the default rating scale**

When creating a new question, one of the standard rating scales is automatically applied from the settings of the Performance product, depending on the question.

You still have the option to choose, for each question, which of the default rating scales you want to use.

💡 In addition to the standard rating scale, you also have the option to add **custom scales**. This is done when adding questions to a review theme. For example, questions about well-being may require different labels.

❗️**Note:** You can optionally use a custom rating scale. However, the results of questions with a non-standard scale will **not** be displayed in reports in Learned.

#### **Where do the default rating scales appear?**

When you navigate to an Review cycle, on the 'Results' page you will find the average score across all the requested themes in the organisation.

In the table you can see the average scores of the company, per team and per employee on the different themes asked. Under the 'Average' tab you will see all themes that were answered with the default rating scale. Under 'Other themes' you will see all the themes that have been asked on a custom rating scale, and therefore do not contribute to the average performance score. For example the theme Wellbeing.

❗️**Note**: If you are working with different custom rating scales within a theme, you will not see this theme reflected under 'Other themes'.
